Fall 2006
This is the first semester we had workshops for the CS 1315 course. The PLTL's were
Bobby Mathew (http://1801.pbwiki.com/)
Swati Vishnubhakat (http://cs1801a.pbwiki.com/)
Brittany Duncan
Liz Helms
Some PLTL's kept a website which they updated weekly to keep track of the activities. The links are given above.
The activities done each week were similar across sections covering the same topic. At the weekly meetings, the PLTL's would discuss how the students responded to the workshop and come up with new activites for the following week.
PLTL Log
Overall Summary-
First Meeting:
- The first week we did the S'mores algorithm activity and they seemed to enjoy it, once we had done that we moved on to logic puzzles and I explained how these puzzles would help them think in the same way that they would when trying to solve coding problems.
- Intro to CS 1801, Played a game relating to computer terms, made smores and wrote a jython function to calculate the number of smores that can be made with a given number of things
Meeting 2
- The second week we just did more logic puzzles and some sudoku, this seemed to help foster a sense of community with the students and they are working together now.
- Activity 1: Picture manipulations - Asked them to download a picture and split it into 3 parts and apply one picture effect to each part (decreased red, negative, grayscale, sepia)
- Activity 2: Revealing an embedded image - Asked them to use a picture I made and use 'for' loops and 'if' conditions to reveal that image.
Meeting 3
- For the third week, the students explained the review to each other and we went around the room and each of them would write a line of code or part of an answer, once again so that they would work together and help each other.
- Split them into groups of 2 and made them do coding questions on the midterm review
Meeting 4
- Making a comic strip - Pulling images from websites, copying them onto a canvas, and adding text to the canvas.
Meeting 5:
- Activity 1: Sound splicing - Make them create a funny conversation by downloading funny sound clips from www.wavsite.com. This involves splicing sounds based on sample ranges and then copying them onto a canvas.
- Activity 2: Showed them bonus features from 'The Matrix' for 15-20 minutes to show chromakey effects and other computer graphics techniques.
