Group 10: Project Proposal

Dynamic View Interpolation

The Effect (Summary)

The effect we want to achieve is called dynamic view interpolation. This is the idea of view morphing (interpolation) from one camera angle to another while the objects in the scene continue to move. First, we will film a scene from two different camera angles. We will then interpolate between individual frames from each camera position and composite these together. The finished product should resemble a scene filmed by camera sweep around the object in a circular motion.

Input/Output

The inputs for the processing are the video streams, rotation speeds, camera angles and probably lots of stuff we haven't forseen yet. The streams must be time-synced initially so the interpolation is done between the frames that represent the same point in time to all the cameras. For each rotation between the cameras the needed view angle is interpolated from the two cameras it falls between and then this synthesized view is the output for the actual frame.

How many layers?

Initially we will only have one layer. Our project does not contain any cg elements that need to be composited into the final movie. However, after we have completed with our "main" effect of dynamic view interpolation, we might play around with some different masks and transparancies allowing for other "composited" effects. For this we might need to add more layers depending on what we will choose to do.

Storyline/board

At this point in time, a concrete storyline per se has not been agreed upon. Rather than focus on a "plot" in the normal sense, we hope to use the movie as a showcase for our effect. This is primarily because we don't want it to be a 4-minute movie with a random digital effect slapped in the middle (or end, as is usually the case). That said, we will still be creating detailed story boards in the traditional sense: on physical 2-D illustration board.

We basically want to use the effect (described above) to create an "impossible" camera movement around a subject, etc. Some possible ideas up in the air (which must be solidified by 2.28) are a 'through-the-wall' movement– the camera seems to pass through a wall while travelling in a semi-circle around a subject– or a shot which makes the viewer think the camera passes through a closed window.

Who will do what

Note: The following gives a list of who will basically head the various parts of the project; it should not be assumed that the tasks listed after each individual's name are going to be done only by him. The following people will simply be responsible for organizing the efforts.

2/17—2/28—3/11—3/26—3/30 Timeline 4/1—4/8—4/21—4/24—5/2

2.28 Fri Concrete idea for the view interpolation must be agreed
upon. In other words, at this time we should know whether
or not we will be doing the 'through the wall' effect, the
'around the cliff-edge' effect, etc.

3.1-3.7 Spring During the Spring Break recess, we all need to
Break individually research the various utilities available to
us, primarily through the internet. At this point in time,
we will have our concrete idea for the effect and can
therefore use this as our limitations for evaluating what
software we will be able to use. We should also look into
the construction of any camera rigs that will be necessary
for the shots.

3.8 Sat We will discuss our individual plans we came up with over
break and agree on a best solution, expand it to involve
any and all details (inputs/outputs, software to use, etc.).

3.9 Sun By this point in time, the Sunday following Spring Break,
we must have the code necessary for performing our desired
effect (or code that we can modify to perform the effect).
We will distribute this amongst each other and spend the
following week familiarizing ourselves

3.13 Thurs Midterm Report Due

3.15 Sat Have a working still-image view morph; this should be of a
similar subject to that of our project's effect. This is
the "point of no return," therefore we need to know BY THIS
DATE if the project is going to be possible. Otherwise, we
have little more than a month to begin a new project.

3.20 Thurs Storyboards completed

3.25 Tue Project Update in Class

3.29 Sat Film Day: We will attempt to do a majority of the filming
on this day. We should ideally have the storyboards, the
camera requirements (calibration tools, rigs, etc.), and
any other necessary inputs ready and available to us on
this day.

4.1 Tue Project Update in Class

4.5 Sat Edit Day: We will attempt to do a majority of the editing
(mostly in Premiere and After Effects) on this day. We
will therefore need all of the filming done at this point.
We will NOT be focusing on the effect at this point; that
will be saved for Sunday.

4.6 Sun Today we will do the various view interpolation scenes and
piece them into the movie.

4.8 Tue Project Update in Class

4.9 Thurs Project Completed
