1. Updated layers and scene design

Following our story line, we carefully designed four major scenes in our final video. The layer organization is different in each of the scene. See our 6-page Shot_Planning.doc for detail information about camera position, settings and layers.

2. Footage Progress

  • We planed our shooting in great detail, including choreography for our actors and environmental settings.
  • We shot our final footage with Shot_Planning.doc(mentioned above).

3. Physical simulation of a specific scene

One of our scene needs the ball just touches Ping Pong table's edge and therefore jumps away.
We tried physical simulation in Maya and successfully achieved the effect
(edgetouch.avi).

4. Progress on ripple effect

As mentioned in update1, we used Maya to achieve ripple effect. But it is too slow and not cost-efficient.
This time, we achieved ripple effect in Adobe After Effect, and we feel satisfied with it.
Here is our new result:

Some of the ripple effects in our video will use AfterEffect instead of Maya, although we still need Maya for one ripple effect on side view. Because only Maya can really deform the geometry, so that it looks real from side view.

Things that Weren't Easy

  • Setting up the entire scene everytime we shoot which pretty much involves moving the green screen room to the activity room (though easy, but really tedious)
  • TIME TIME TIME, time control
  • Lighting effect. We ended up with sealing both of the windows in the shooting room(TSRB activity room).
  • We should have more camera positions to switch between clips, so that we don't have to choreograph for a long clip, but that also introduce more work for calibration for each point of view. A hard decision of trade-off.

Things Left to Do

  • Background and floor footage for remote site.
  • Create multiple ball effects and polish motion blur effect for the player.
  • Creating the CG ball and design its pattern of movement between the two players.
  • Composite our footage and make sure it won't last more than 1.5 minute.
